Academy Wins Awards At CSL Gala

Toronto FC Academy’s junior team and players won some accolades at the Canadian Soccer League Annual Awards night.

The juniors brought back a trophy and winners’ medals for winning the CSL Second Division Championship, though couldn’t carry their momentum into the playoffs.

Two of its players received further recognition. Mark Rogal won CSL Division II Goalkeeper of the Year award. Rogal played the majority of games during the season and is considered “one of the brightest young Canadian goalkeepers,” according to team head coach Anthony Capotosto. He was recently invited to the Canada Under-18 national team camp.

Teammate Mark Wadid won the Division II Rookie of the Year after scoring 16 goals in as many matches. Capotosto describes him as “a constant threat to the opposition with his deceptive change of speed and ability to finish from in and around the box.” Wadid was called to Canada U-18 to join Rogal and the forward will move up to the senior TFC Academy team next season.

The senior TFC Academy team finished seventh in CSL Division I with 10 wins, five draws and 35 points from 22 matches. The juniors won Division II with an undefeated record of 13 wins and three draws. They scored 57 goals in those 16 matches and conceded just nine times. Both teams bowed out of the playoffs early.

The Academy showed its discipline in 2012, winning the CSL Fair Play and Respect Award to round out the night.
