Toronto FC Academy’s U-16 and U-15 teams wrapped up group play on Sunday, March 29, at the Generation adidas Cup at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. TFC’s U-16 team topped its group, advancing to the Championship bracket, and the U-15s placed third in its group, which will compete in the Premier bracket. The tournament’s knockout rounds are scheduled to start today, Tuesday, March 31, starting with the Round of 16. The quarterfinals will begin on Wednesday, April 1, the semifinals on Friday, April 3 and the finals on Saturday, April 4.
TFC’s U-16 team is one of 16 teams that earned their place in the Round of 16 in the Championship bracket, which is composed of the 10 group winners and the top six second-place finishers. Toronto FC’s U-15 team is among the next-best 16 teams in their age group and will fight in the Premier bracket. Both teams will start their knockout journey today, Tuesday, March 31. Led by Nikola Stakic, the U-16s will face Real Salt Lake City in the Round of 16 at 2:30 p.m. ET, while the U-15s, led by Taylor Lord, play against St. Louis CITY SC at 12:00 p.m. ET.
During the group stage of the tournament, TFC’s U-16 team topped its group with a 1W-2T-0L record, finishing with 6 points, and earning their place in the Championship bracket. In an all-or-nothing final group stage match against Austin FC, TFC defeated the Los Verdes in a penalty shootout that saw goalkeeper Harrison Patterson make two big stops and Ethan Reid, Niko Brodar and Grayson MacKinnon each putting one away to come out on top, 3-1 in the shootout and secured their spot in the Round of 16. The U-16s also defeated international opponent Busan IPark 2-1 in regulation, highlighted by a free-kick goal from John Chukwu and a crafty lob over the South Korea side’s goalkeeper from Devonte Simon.
The U-15s finished third in their bracket with four points, earning a final record of 1W-1L-1T, which advanced them to the Premier bracket. After a slim 1-0 loss to FC Dallas in the opening match of the tournament, a 2-2 tie and penalty shootout loss to LA Galaxy, the U-15s made a statement in their big stage match against Bayern München FC on Sunday, March 29. A lone goal from Omar Singh and a clean sheet from Nate Cool earned the U-15s three points in a 1-0 victory over the top German side, handing the group winners, Bayern, their only loss during the group stage.
