AN ODE TO THE PAST

Historically, TFC hold a 5W-5L-7T record through their first 17 regular season meetings with the Five Stripes, while holding the edge in postseason play having defeated Atlanta United in the 2019 MLS Eastern Conference Final. The Reds will be aiming for their first regular season road win in Atlanta, where they have recorded four ties and four losses across the past eight seasons. Earlier this year, the clubs played to a 1-1 draw on July 12, with Deybi Flores’ header cancelled out by Emmanuel Latte Lath’s stoppage-time penalty at BMO Field.
STEP BY STEP
The Reds enter Sunday’s matchup on the back of consecutive draws in MLS play this month. Last Saturday, Toronto FC and the Columbus Crew battled to an entertaining 1-1 draw at BMO Field. Diego Rossi opened the scoring for the visitors in the eighth minute, before new acquisition Jules-Anthony Vilsaint came off the bench to equalize in the 77th minute. New Designated Player Djordje Mihailovic delivered the cross on Vilsaint’s game-tying goal, marking his second straight match with an assist following his secondary helper against Philadelphia a week earlier.
On August 9, TFC earned a hard-fought road point against Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield leaders Philadelphia Union. The Union struck early through Indiana Vassilev before Deandre Kerr appeared off the bench to level in stoppage time. The clash also marked Djordje Mihailovic’s club debut, where he created a team-high four chances, while both Mihailovic and Malik Henry registered their first assists for the Reds on Kerr’s game-tying goal.

INSTANT IMPACT
New acquisition Jules-Anthony Vilsaint marked his Toronto FC debut in emphatic fashion on Saturday night. On Wednesday, August 13, TFC traded midfielder Matty Longstaff to CF Montréal in exchange for Vilsaint and up to $275,000 in General Allocation Money. The 22-year-old spent three seasons with CF Montréal, recording three goals and five assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. Just three days later, he made his Toronto FC debut as a 75th minute substitute, becoming the tenth player to debut for the Reds this season. The Montreal native made an instant impact, scoring the equalizer just two minutes into his debut with only his second touch as a Red and earning the Man of the Match award. Vilsaint’s goal was the fastest by a player making his Toronto debut, eclipsing Justin Braun (13 minutes in 2013).
MILESTONE WATCH
Derrick Etienne Jr. has made 49 appearances for Toronto FC across all competitions (Major League Soccer, Canadian Championship and Leagues Cup) and his next outing will mark his 50th for the club. The Reds remained active ahead of the MLS Secondary Transfer Window closing on Thursday, August 21.
