Toronto FC (5-13-6, 21 points) travel to the City of Brotherly Love to take on Philadelphia Union (15-5-5, 50 points) at Subaru Park on Saturday evening. The Matchday 28 contest in Chester, Pennsylvania kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally in English and Spanish on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.

Following the Leagues Cup break, Toronto FC kick off a busy August schedule with a visit to face Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield leaders Philadelphia Union, marking the first of four matches this month. Historically, TFC hold a 14W-12L-8T record in 34 regular season meetings with the Union and will be looking to record their first road win over Philadelphia since March 2019.

AN ODE TO THE PAST

TFC take on Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield leaders Philadelphia Union for the 35th encounter in the all-time series between the two clubs. Historically, TFC hold a 14W-12L-8T record through their first 34 regular season meetings with the Union. The Reds have recorded results in three of their last four meetings against Philadelphia, with a pair of wins and a tie before falling to 2-1 in their most recent meeting on May 28 at BMO Field. Toronto will be aiming for their first road win over the Union since March 2, 2019, when a Michael Bradley brace and a Nick DeLeon goal secured a 3-1 victory at Subaru Park (formerly Talen Energy Stadium) in Chester, Pennsylvania.

The Reds resume their MLS campaign following the Leagues Cup break with the first of four matches in August. After earning a road win over San Diego FC on July 16, TFC closed out the month with back-to-back away losses to Charlotte FC and Nashville SC. On July 26, goals from Idan Toklomati and Kerwin Vargas lifted Charlotte to a 2-0 victory at Bank of America Stadium. A week earlier, a first-half goal from Sam Surridge proved decisive as Nashville edged Toronto 1-0 at GEODIS Park. On the night, Toronto FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson moved into third place on Major League Soccer’s all-time list for regular season minutes played, reaching 38,046.

MILESTONE WATCH

English midfielder Matty Longstaff has made 49 MLS appearances for TFC since joining the club in February 2024 and his next league appearance will be his 50th MLS appearance for the Reds.

DESIGNATED DJORDJE

On Thursday, Toronto FC announced the acquisition of new Designated Player Djordje Mihailovic in a cash-for-player trade from Colorado Rapids, in exchange for $8 million and up to $1 million in conditional cash if certain performance-based metrics are met. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder brings a wealth of experience, both within Major League Soccer and Europe, and has registered 48 goals and 63 assists in 243 games played during his professional career featuring for Chicago Fire, CF Montréal, AZ Alkmaar (Eredivisie) and the Colorado Rapids. Most recently, the Jacksonville, Florida native registered 23 goals and 22 assists through 63 appearances for Colorado Rapids since joining the club as a Designated Player in January 2024. In his first season with the Rapids, the playmaker set a club record for most goal contributions in a single season in Rapids history by tallying 11 goals and 14 assists in Major League Soccer regular season action. He originally came through the youth ranks at Chicago Fire FC before signing as a Homegrown Player with the Chicago Fire’s First Team in January 2017. Internationally, Mihailovic has earned 11 caps with the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) and has represented the U.S. in two Concacaf Gold Cup (2019 and 2023) tournaments.

SUMMER ROSTER MOVES

The Reds have been active since the opening of the league’s Secondary Transfer Window in late July. The Club acquired $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for a 2025 International Roster Slot, an additional $175,000 in 2025 GAM from Portland Timbers in exchange for a 2025 International Roster Slot along with $100,000 in 2025 GAM from Los Angeles FC in exchange for the Discovery Priority for Ryan Porteous.

On August 1, Toronto FC also acquired up to $550,000 in GAM from Orlando City SC in exchange for winger and 2024 MLS SuperDraft pick Tyrese Spicer. As part of the transaction, Toronto FC will receive a guaranteed $500,000 in GAM – $225,000 in 2025 GAM and $275,000 in 2026 GAM – and up to an additional $50,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met. Spicer, 24, was selected by Toronto FC with the first overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft from Lipscomb University on December 19, 2023. In two seasons (2024, 2025) with the Reds, Spicer registered six goals and two assists across 42 appearances in all competitions. The Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago native made his TFC debut on March 16, 2024, against New York City FC and registered his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win over Atlanta United on March 23, 2024. Internationally, Spicer earned six caps with the Trinidad & Tobago National Team, including his senior debut against Cuba in March 2025.

Toronto also recalled Hugo Mbongue from his loan at Lexington SC of the USL Championship and sent the Canadian forward on loan to Vancouver FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) for the remainder of the 2025 season.
