STEP BY STEP

Toronto FC enter Saturday’s encounter after earning results in four of the club’s last five matches. Between March 29 and April 12, the Reds recorded three consecutive draws against Vancouver Whitecaps, Inter Miami CF and Minnesota United, keeping two clean sheets against Vancouver and Minnesota. On April 19, Toronto FC then picked up their first victory of the 2025 MLS season with a resilient 1-0 road win against Real Salt Lake at America First Field. TFC Academy product Theo Corbeanu’s first goal for the club proved to be the difference on the night in Sandy, Utah. Teammate Sean Johnson, meanwhile, turned away all six of Real Salt Lake’s shots on target and helped TFC secure their third clean sheet of the campaign. The American shot-stopper was subsequently named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 9 as a starter following his standout performance and shutout in the club’s first win of 2025. A week later, the Reds fell to a 1-0 loss against New York City FC courtesy of Alonso Martínez’s 64th minute penalty goal at BMO Field, bringing the club’s four-match unbeaten run to a halt.

BATTLE OF THE NORTH

On Wednesday evening, TFC played out a 2-2 draw against rivals CF Montréal in the latest edition of the 401 Derby, before falling short in a 3-2 penalty shootout loss in the preliminary round of the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship. The Reds took a 29th minute lead at BMO Field through Theo Corbeanu’s powerful left-footed strike from distance. CF Montréal equalized through Joel Waterman’s half-volley, assisted by TFC Academy product and former TFC defender Luca Petrasso, in the 70th minute. Three minutes later, the hosts struck again as Corbeanu carried the ball into Montréal’s penalty area from his own half before setting up Tyrese Spicer for a well-placed, right-footed strike to make it 2-1. The Bleu-blanc-noir, however, found their second equalizer of the night through an acrobatic volley from Italian Giacomo Vrioni in the 88th minute. With the scores deadlocked at two upon the full-time whistle, CF Montréal emerged victorious from the penalty shootout by a 3-2 scoreline, to advance to the quarter-finals of the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship. On the night, TFC Academy product and Toronto FC II forward Dékwon Barrow made his debut for Toronto FC as a starter, becoming the sixth player to make his club debut during the 2025 season. Additionally, with his first-half goal and club-first assist, Theo Corbeanu recorded his first multi-goal contribution performance for TFC.

Bono-Urruti

ONCE A RED

A pair of New England Revolution’s off-season roster additions have previously suited up for Toronto FC in their respective MLS careers. American goalkeeper Alex Bono was originally selected sixth overall by TFC in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft and made 157 appearances across eight seasons (2015 – 2022) for the club, helping the Reds win an unprecedented domestic treble in 2017 with the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship. In addition to conceding zero goals through TFC’s Eastern Conference final and MLS Cup matches against Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders in 2017, the Syracuse, New York native currently holds several of the Reds’ all-time goalkeeping records including most goalkeeper wins (67), most clean sheets (35) and most shutouts in a single season (13). Bono recently joined New England as a free agent in December 2024 and has featured on the bench for all nine of Revolution’s MLS matches this season. Additionally, forward Maximiliano Urruti began his MLS career with Toronto FC in August 2013 and made two appearances for the Reds, including his debut against Columbus Crew on August 17, 2013.
