MATCH RECAP | Toronto FC 3 – 2 Colorado Rapids

TFC26-ROS-FullTime-16x9

Toronto FC (3W-2L-1T, 10 points) secured a second consecutive come-from-behind win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Western Conference’s Colorado Rapids (3W-3L-0T, 9 points) by a 3-2 scoreline behind strikes from Richie Laryea and Josh Sargent along with a Zack Steffen own goal at BMO Field.

Toronto FC Head Coach Robin Fraser named an unchanged starting eleven from the side that defeated Columbus Crew 2-1 a fortnight ago. Prior to kick-off, a special pre-match ceremony honouring captain Jonathan Osorio’s historic milestone of making 400 appearances for his hometown club took place at BMO Field.

TFC controlled majority of the first half on a cold, windy afternoon by the lake shore but were unable to find a breakthrough before the interval. Daniel Sallói and Alonso Coello saw efforts denied by Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen while Walker Zimmerman, Josh Sargent and Deandre Kerr had efforts of their own.

The Rapids were reduced to 10 men in the 35th minute when Jackson Travis was sent off for a dangerous foul on Raheem Edwards following an in-stadium VAR review.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men four minutes into the second half, when Raheem Edwards’ challenge on Wayne Frederick was upgraded to a red card following an in-stadium VAR review.

Colorado capitalized from the resulting set piece in the 51st minute, with Paxten Aaronson converting a direct free kick with a powerful low strike to open the scoring.

The Rapids doubled their advantage two minutes later as Keegan Rosenberry fired home to make it 2-0.

Brazilian Matheus Pereira came off the bench in 52nd minute to make his club debut after an injury layoff, having joined the Reds in December.

Toronto pulled one back through Richie Laryea, whose shot from the right flank beat Zack Steffen at the near post to cut the Reds’ deficit to one.

The 65th minute strike marked Richie Laryea’s first goal and José Cifuentes’ first assist of the 2026 MLS season, while Josh Sargent registered his first assist for TFC.

Colorado Rapids were reduced to nine men in the 74th minute when Miguel Navarro received a second yellow card for a foul on Richie Laryea.

Three minutes later, Toronto FC drew level in unusual fashion as Zack Steffen failed to control Keegan Rosenberry’s long clearance, making it 2-2.

The Reds completed their second-half comeback shortly after, as Josh Sargent rose highest to head home Alonso Coello’s in-swinging corner.

The 85th minute goal marked Sargent’s first goal for his new club and Alonso Coello’s first assist of the 2026 MLS season.

Sargent’s header ultimately stood as the match-winner, as Toronto held on for a 3-2 victory to secure all three points at home, record back-to-back wins, and extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

Toronto FC closed out the remainder of the match in professional fashion, with Sargent’s header standing as the game-winner as the Reds secured back-to-back victories and extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

Toronto FC continue their 2026 MLS campaign next Saturday, hosting FC Cincinnati on April 11. Kick-off from BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario is set for 1:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on Apple TV.
