Toronto FC (2W-6L-4T, 10 points) recorded a 2 – 0 shutout victory against D.C. United (3W-6L-3T, 12 points) at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of a goal from Lorenzo Insigne and an own goal by Lucas Bartlett.

TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser made a pair of changes from the side that started against New England Revolution last weekend with Kevin Long and Lorenzo Insigne coming in for Nicksoen Gomis and Kevin Longstaff.

The Reds came within inches of opening the scoring early when Deybi Flores’ volley from outside of the box struck the upright in the ninth minute, before Federico Bernardeschi’s follow-up effort narrowly missed the target.

Fifteen minutes later, the hosts carved out another goalscoring opportunity when Lorenzo Insigne’s goal-bound effort was saved by D.C. United goalkeeper Luis Barraza, before Ola Brynhildsen’s blazed over the the rebound.

Eager to capitalize on their dominance, the Reds flew out of the traps and opened the scoring early following the half-time interval. Just three minutes into the restart, Toronto FC launched a swift counter-attack from a D.C. United corner. Theo Corbeanu led the charge down the left wing and delivered a pinpoint cross into a dangerous area, where Lorenzo Insigne met it with a diving header which found the back of the net.

The 49th minute strike marked Insigne’s first goal of the 2025 MLS campaign and Corbeanu’s first MLS assist for Toronto FC.

The Reds doubled their lead after a tidy exchange between Italian duo Federico Bernardeschi and Lorenzo Insigne, whose dangerous cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by D.C. United’s Lucas Bartlett in the 66th minute.

Down the other end, Toronto FC goalkeeper Sean Johnson was on hand to deny Christian Benteke, coming up with an acrobatic save to keep the shutout intact in the 85th minute.

TFC continued to drive forward and create chances but were unable to add a third goal on the afternoon. The Reds saw out the remainder of the match with poise and composure, securing a clean sheet and 2-0 victory for the second win of their MLS season.

Next up, Toronto FC take on FC Cincinnati in midweek MLS action on Wednesday, May 14. Kick-off from BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
