Johnston On The FAN 590

Toronto FC Director of Soccer Mo Johnston believes the first half performance in the 2-1 win over Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night was the best 45 minutes in the history of the club.

Speaking on The FAN 590’s Greg Brady  show on Wednesday afternoon, Johnston was full of praise for the players. “It was a wonderful performance from the team,” he said. “We opened up Cruz Azul and our guys really took it took them. Cruz Azul are a great team and we did very well. I thought the first half was the best we have played in franchise history.”

Johnston also praised the supporters for creating a special atmosphere at BMO Field on Tuesday night. “It was totally different atmosphere last night. Our fans were passionate all night long and it was an incredible atmosphere from the first minute all the way through to the end of the game.”

Toronto’s former Spanish international striker Mista opened his account for the team with the Reds’ second goal against Cruz Azul and Johnston was delighted to see the contribution of the 31 year old.

“Mista is very smooth on the ball and he has a tremendous left foot on him. In the last few games he has put guys through and we haven’t capitalized, but last night his control and finish was first class.”

“He has played for his national team, and has played for a number of big clubs in big games. He has shown great enthusiasm in coming here and has done really well. Once we get him really fit he will add a lot of spice to our team in the build up to the playoffs.”

Now Toronto must play three road games in the Champions League, starting with a visit to six time Panamanian champions Arabe Unido on Tuesday (August 24) live on GOLTV Canada. “The good thing for the team is that playing in Champions League gives our league a lot of credibility, especially when we beat a team like Cruz Azul. Our guys are going to get tired on the road, but we will have some players back in the coming weeks and Preki has been doing a good job giving guys minutes.”
