AN ODE TO THE PAST

Historically, TFC hold a 2W-6L-0T record through their first eight meetings with the Herons. On Wednesday, the Reds will be looking for their first road victory in five attempts against the 2023 Leagues Cup champions in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. THE CLIMB CONTINUES
Toronto FC enter Matchday 27 action fresh from returning to winning ways after defeating Philadelphia Union by a 2-1 score at BMO Field on Saturday evening. The visitors took the lead through Tai Baribo’s header from Kai Wagner’s free-kick delivery in the 39th minute before the Reds levelled via Jack Elliott’s own goal in the 74th minute. TFC completed the second-half comeback when a swift sequence between substitutes Deybi Flores, Lorenzo Insigne and Deandre Kerr culminated with the Canadian forward scoring in the 78th minute to secure the 2-1 result. With the assist on Kerr’s game-winning goal, Lorenzo Insigne registered his tenth goal contribution of the 2024 MLS regular season (four goals, six assists). With the victory, TFC’s Sean Johnson also became the fourth goalkeeper to record at least 150 regular season wins in MLS history, joining Nick Rimando (223), Kevin Hartman (180) and Stefan Frei (166).
TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY
Toronto FC’s Deandre Kerr was named to the Major League Soccer Team of the Matchday 26, as a substitute, following his game-winning cameo off the bench in Saturday’s win against Philadelphia Union. Introduced in the 62nd minute to provide an offensive spark for the hosts, Kerr played a key role in his side’s equalizer as his positioning and presence in the box forced Philadelphia Union’s Jack Elliott into an own goal from close-range following Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty’s downward header into the penalty area. Four minutes later, TFC completed the second-half turnaround when Kerr ran onto Lorenzo Insigne’s incisive through ball and unleashed a powerful left-footed finish past Philly goalkeeper Andrew Rick. The 78th minute goal marked the Ajax native’s first MLS goal of the 2024 campaign and proved to be the evening’s game-winning goal, helping the Reds secure the 2-1 victory and their second come-from-behind win of 2024. In total, Toronto FC have now earned 16 MLS Team of the Matchday honours during the 2024 MLS regular season – Federico Bernardeschi (4), Sean Johnson (3), Lorenzo Insigne (3), Deybi Flores (2), Deandre Kerr (1), Kevin Long (1), Prince Owusu (1) and Tyrese Spicer (1).

After advancing from Group A in second place, Les Rouges recorded a historic penalty shootout victory against Venezuela in the quarter-final before falling 2-0 to the world champions and eventual tournament winners, Argentina, in the semi-final. Canada, the only CONCACAF nation to reach the final four, lost in a penalty shootout to Uruguay in the third-place match and cemented their tournament run in history by finishing the 16-team tournament in fourth place.
