Building On Momentum

Dan Gargan believes Toronto FC can build on the momentum from the last two matches as they head into a crucial league match at home to San Jose Earthquakes at BMO Field on Saturday.

As the team returned to training on Thursday, Gargan talked about the impact made by interim head coach Nick Dasovic. “It has been good so far,” said the 27-year-old Philadelphia native. “Nick has been here for a long time and the players know him really well. He has a good hold on the locker room and he reacts well to players. A lot of the guys in the locker room are responding to that pretty well.”

“He knows when to build us up and when to knock us down and it has been a good start to his era. Obviously it has been a difficult time at the club recently but we just need to perform and compete. He has done a good job on getting us ready for each game and keeping focussed.”

Toronto head into Saturday’s match unbeaten in the last two games of their ten day road trip. After a dramatic last minute win at Houston kept playoff hopes alive, the Reds battled to a goalless draw at Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul in midweek.

“We have picked up two really good results on the road,” said Gargan. “To start off and get a 93rd minute goal in Houston helped us to feel a little bit better about ourselves. Then we went into Cruz Azul and got a result. We all really listened to Daso’s plan and sat in there with a defensive shell. We were very compact and talking to each other and working for each other.”

“It wasn’t the most beautiful soccer, but that wasn’t the aim. Everybody bought into the plan and to prevent them from scoring was testament to the job done by our backline but also the work rate from throughout the team.”

“Going forward we know it is down to us. We can help ourselves and hurt ourselves by how we perform day in day out. We are really looking forward to San Jose. We can’t look at the scoreboard anymore because that isn’t going to affect us. We have to take care of our own business and stay focussed on what we have in front of us.”
