Week 11 Breakthrough: Seattle & D.C.

There were two rare breakthroughs in week 11 for away teams in Major League Soccer. Seattle did the unthinkable and ended Salt Lake’s record unbeaten streak, while D.C. United spoiled Portland’s perfect home record.

On Saturday, Patrick Ianni and Lamar Neagle fired the Sounders 2-0 ahead of the hometown Royals. Salt Lake hit back to make it 2-1, but the 88th minute goal from Nelson Gonzalez was far too late to salvage the club’s record 29-game MLS home unbeaten streak.  The win gives Seattle a mixed week as three days earlier the Sounders dropped a 1-0 decision to Dallas at home.

Earlier on Saturday, Toronto FC was devastated by Phildaelphia 6-2 at BMO Field. The four-goal margin was the worst loss at home for the Reds, and it marks the first time Toronto conceded six goals in club history. The league’s other Canadian club, Vancouver, was held to a 1-1 draw to New York at home. The Whitecaps are winless in 11 league games since beating Toronto on opening day.  The Red Bulls were playing their second match of the week after being held to a 2-2 draw by Colorado in New Jersey on Wednesday.

The Texas Derby also took place on Saturday, where Colin Clark helped Houston level 2-2 against Dallas with a strike three minutes from time. The goals kept coming in Ohio, there Chivas USA had three separate leads canceled by Columbus in a 3-3 affair. The Goats’ arch-rival Los Angeles fared better away from home, beating New England 1-0 at Foxborough to earn six points and two clean sheets this week. Elsewhere, Chicago and San Jose drew 2-2 and MLS Cup champion Colorado notched a fifth consecutive draw, held 1-1 at home to league-worst Sporting Kansas City.

There was only one game on Sunday and it took place in Portland. The Timbers had won all five home games since joining MLS, but D.C. received goals from Perry Kitchen, Chris Pontius and Josh Wolff to keep Portland from making it six on the trot in a 3-2 final.

Philadelphia’s victory and New York’s two draws puts the Union on the Eastern Conference perch with 20 points from 11 games. The Red Bulls trail by two points but have played one more game. Houston holds down third place with 15 points and a superior goal difference to D.C. United.

Out West, Los Angeles made the most of their week and at 29 points the Galaxy sits seven clear of Dallas for first overall. Seattle is third with 20 points from 14 games.
