Toronto FC announced today that the Club has reached a transfer agreement to sign 26-year-old United States international forward Josh Sargent from Norwich City FC of the English Football League (EFL) Championship. Sargent will join Toronto FC as a Designated Player through the 2030-31 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.

Additionally, Toronto FC acquired St. Louis City SC’s right of first refusal (ROFR) for Sargent in exchange for $500,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) – $250,000 in 2026 GAM and $250,000 in 2027 GAM – and up to an additional $225,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met. He will be added to TFC’s roster, pending a medical and receipt of his work permit and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“We are thrilled to welcome Josh to Toronto FC as a foundational piece of what we have been building here at the club since last summer,” said Toronto FC General Manger Jason Hernandez. “He brings high-level experience in some of the strongest leagues in the world and international pedigree at just 26 years old. He is a proven goalscorer, with a winning mentality and the intelligence that will lead our attack for years to come. Josh will just begin to enter the prime of his career while representing our club and our city. When we started conversations with Josh and his representation, it was very evident that he isn’t just the right player, but the right person to elevate the culture we have been building. We are excited for him and his family to start this new journey with us in Toronto, and we look forward to everyone supporting him as he steps on the field to fight for our badge.”

Sargent joins TFC from the EFL Championship, where he spent the past five seasons (2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25, 2025-26), establishing himself as one of Norwich’s most influential attacking players for the club. During his time with the Canaries, Sargent registered 56 goals and 15 assists through 157 appearances in all competitions since making his English Premier League debut against Liverpool on August 14, 2021.

The O’Fallon, Missouri native scored his first EPL goal on January 21, 2022, when he produced a scorpion-kick goal that helped the Canaries to a 3-0 win against Watford F.C. The acrobatic scorpion-kick goal was nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month (January). During the 2024-25 season, Sargent was named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season, having recorded 20 goal contributions (15 goals and 5 assists) in 32 Championship appearances, including a streak of 11 goals in 15 matches. The same season, the attacker was voted Norwich City’s Player of the Season by the club’s supporters. Sargent originally signed for Norwich City on August 9, 2021, at the age of 21, following a successful stint in the Bundesliga. In his last season with Norwich City, the centre-forward was named EFL Championship Player of the Month for August 2025, following an impactful start to the 2025-26 season, where he registered five goals in the club’s opening four matches.

“When TFC took its most important steps to rebuild the club into a perennial contender last summer, the priority was to build a team with championship talent on the pitch, but just as importantly, to add the right leadership and experience required to create a winning culture and chemistry,” said Keith Pelley, MLSE President & CEO. “Josh Sargent is a world-class player and person, and his addition marks an important step forward in our work to deliver a second MLS Cup championship to our supporters and city. Today is a very good day for Toronto FC and its supporters, but we know that today is just one step in the process. There is much work still to do.”

Prior to his time with the Canaries, the U.S. Men’s National Team international spent two and a half years (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21) with German top-flight club SV Werder Bremen, where he registered 15 goals and nine assists in 83 games in all competitions. He made his senior debut with Bremen as a substitute against Fortuna Düsseldorf on December 7, 2018, and scored with his first touch to record the fastest goal by a debutant in club history.

“I am excited to join Toronto FC and start a new chapter in my life with my family in Toronto,” said Sargent. “I am grateful to everyone at the club for their belief in me and all the support throughout the process to make this move possible. From the initial conversations with Toronto FC, what excited me the most about the project was the ambition to be a competitive and winning team. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and play in front of all the fans at BMO Field.”

Earlier in his career, Sargent was a standout prospect in the U.S. youth soccer system with his pathway beginning with high-level academy training and dominant national team performances. He originally joined U.S. Soccer Development Academy club Scott Gallagher Missouri at the age of eight and spent eight years progressing through the youth ranks, often playing against older age groups. Following a number of impressive performances for his hometown Academy side, he joined the U-17 U.S. Men’s National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida before making his move to Germany.

At the international level, he has earned 29 caps with the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) and scored five goals for his country. He was named in the U.S. 26-man roster for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he featured in all three group stage matches. Sargent made his senior debut and recorded his first goal with the USMNT in a friendly against Bolivia on May 28, 2018, becoming the second youngest player (18 years and102 days) to score for the USMNT on his debut. He received his first senior call-up for a friendly against Portugal on November 7, 2017, becoming the first USA player called to camps with the U-17, U-20 and senior teams in the same calendar year. In 2017, he represented the U.S. at both the FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cups, becoming only the second American player, following former player Freddy Adu, to play in both youth World Cups in the same year. During the FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea, the American attacker became the youngest player (17 years and 91 days) to score for his country at a FIFA U-20 World Cup. Sargent earned the Silver Boot award at the FIFA U-20 World Cup after scoring four goals, tying Freddy Adu for the most career goals by a U.S. player in FIFA Youth World Cups, with a total of seven.
