Toronto FC goalkepeer Sean Johnson has been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 20, as a substitute, after a standout performance in the club’s 1-1 draw against New York Red Bulls at BMO Field.
Making a team-leading 18th start of the 2025 campaign, Sean Johnson played a key role in helping the Reds earn a point in their return from the FIFA Club World Cup and Concacaf Gold Cup break. The Lilburn, Georgia native completed 23 passes and made four saves during the Matchday 20 contest, including a remarkable, instinctive stop to deny Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg early on.
The veteran MLS goalkeeper is enjoying an impressive 15th Major League Soccer season, having recorded four clean sheets and ranking joint-second in saves (70) during the 2025 campaign, trailing only Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan (74). Last month, Johnson moved into fifth on Major League Soccer’s all-time list for regular season minutes played, surpassing Kevin Hartman, and joining former Red Stefan Frei as the only active players among the top five.
The honour marks Johnson’s third MLS Team of the Matchday selection of the 2025 season and his seventh overall since joining Toronto FC in January 2023. In total, Toronto FC have now earned eight MLS Team of the Matchday selections during the 2025 MLS regular season – Sean Johnson (3), Federico Bernardeschi (2), Ola Brynhildsen (1), Theo Corbeanu (1) and Lorenzo Insigne (1).
