AN ODE TO THE PAST

TFC host 2015 MLS expansion club Orlando City SC for the 23rd encounter in the all-time series between the two clubs. Historically, TFC hold a 9W-10L-3T head-to-head record through their first 22 meetings with the Lions in regular season play. The two Eastern Conference sides have met ten times previously at BMO Field, where Toronto FC enjoyed an unbeaten run between 2015 and 2019 (4W-2T) and hold the edge in the all-time series at BMO Field with four wins to Orlando’s three. The Reds will seek to return to winning ways against Orlando and aim to secure their first home victory over the Lions since May 18, 2018 – a 2-1 result sealed by goals from Jay Chapman and Ryan Telfer.

STEP BY STEP

The Reds enter their season finale on Saturday following the end of their eight-match unbeaten run against Los Angeles FC on October 8. From August 9 and October 4, the club recorded eight straight draws in league play, marking the longest tie streak in Major League Soccer history. In August, TFC split points with the Philadelphia Union, Columbus Crew, Atlanta United and CF Montréal before earning further draws against the New England Revolution, Columbus Crew and Inter Miami CF in September. Six of those seven matches ended with a 1-1 scoreline, with a goalless stalemate in Atlanta standing as the lone exception.

Toronto FC extended their record-setting run with a dramatic 2-2 result against Chicago Fire FC on October 4. Playing at Soldier Field, the Reds took the lead in the first half through an own goal from Jack Elliott. The Fire defender made amends down the other end, combining with Philip Zinckernagel twice to give Chicago a 2-1 lead moments from the full-time whistle. In stoppage time, however, TFC were handed a lifeline when Sigurd Rosted was brought down in the box by Jonathan Bamba. Djordje Mihailovic’s penalty was initially denied by Chris Brady, but the American midfielder reacted quickest to slot home the rebound against his former club, rescuing a point and stretching Toronto’s unbeaten streak to eight matches.

Four nights later, the Reds’ run came to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Los Angeles FC at BMO Stadium. The hosts struck early through Jeremy Ebobisse before American goalkeeper Sean Johnson denied David Martínez from the spot – his ninth career MLS penalty save and first with TFC. LAFC went on to seal the win nine minutes later through substitute Frankie Amaya, securing all three points in the City of Angels.

ONCE A RED

Saturday’s regular season finale is set to feature a pair of familiar faces lining up against their former clubs at BMO Field. TFC’s Richie Laryea began his MLS journey with Orlando City SC after two seasons at Akron University. Selected seventh overall by the Lions in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, he made 21 appearances across three seasons (2016 – 2018) for Orlando before returning home to join Toronto FC in March 2019. Since then, the Canadian international has made 145 combined appearances for his hometown club, ranking second among active players and tenth in club history.

Down the other side, Orlando’s Tyrese Spicer was originally selected first overall by Toronto FC in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft out of Lipscomb University. The Trincity, Trinidad and Tobago native recorded six goals and two assists across 42 combined appearances over two seasons (2024, 2025) with the Reds. The winger made his TFC debut on March 16, 2024, against New York City FC and scored his first goal a week later in a 2-0 win over Atlanta. On August 1, 2025, Toronto FC traded Spicer to Orlando City SC in exchange for up to $550,000 in General Allocation Money. Since joining the Lions late in the summer, the winger has enjoyed a productive start, recording a goal and two assists in seven MLS appearances (two starts).
