AN ODE TO THE PAST

Toronto FC meet 2020 MLS expansion side Inter Miami CF for the twelfth encounter in the all-time MLS series between the two clubs. Historically, Toronto FC hold a 2W-8L-1T record through their first 11 MLS regular season meetings with the Herons. Earlier this season, the two Eastern Conference clubs played out a 1-1 draw on April 6 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Federico Bernardeschi’s opener was cancelled out by an equalizer from reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP Lionel Messi. At BMO Field, Toronto have recorded two wins and three losses in five previous encounters with the Herons and will be looking to secure their first home victory over Miami since March 18, 2023, where goals from Jonathan Osorio and Mark-Anthony Kaye sealed a 2-0 victory.

STEP BY STEP

The Reds enter Matchday 37 on the back of a six-game unbeaten run, marking the first time in club history the club has recorded six consecutive ties in MLS play, dating back to August 9. In August, TFC played to road ties against Philadelphia Union and Atlanta United, along with home draws against Columbus Crew and CF Montréal. All but one of those results ended 1-1, with the lone exception a scoreless road stalemate against Atlanta on August 24.

After the FIFA international break in September, Toronto resumed league action with another 1-1 result, this time away to the New England Revolution on September 13. Theo Corbeanu opened the scoring with his team-leading sixth goal of the MLS season before Luca Langoni’s deflected strike levelled the match, a result that officially eliminated TFC from postseason contention.

Most recently, the Reds battled to a sixth consecutive draw, a 1-1 result against Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field. Wessam Abou Ali gave the hosts a 16th-minute lead before Jonathan Osorio teed up Richie Laryea for the equalizer in the second half. The 51st minute finish marked Laryea’s first goal of the 2025 MLS campaign, while Osorio notched his fifth MLS goal contribution (three goals, two assists) of 2025, as the hometown duo combined to secure another hard-fought point for the Reds.

TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY

On Monday, Toronto FC defender Richie Laryea was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 35 after his vital performance in the Reds’ 1-1 draw against Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field. Trailing by a goal in Ohio, the Reds began the second half on the front foot and drew level just six minutes into the restart through Laryea. The move began with fellow Toronto native Jonathan Osorio collecting a short pass from Derrick Etienne Jr. before threading a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Laryea, whose marauding run from full-back ended with an unstoppable, low strike past Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte. The equalizer, sparked by the hometown link between Laryea and Osorio, was the Canadian international’s 13th goal for TFC and his first of the 2025 MLS season. The honour marks Richie Laryea’s first MLS Team of the Matchday selection of the 2025 season and his fourteenth overall for Toronto FC. In total, Toronto FC have now earned 13 MLS Team of the Matchday selections during the 2025 MLS regular season – Sean Johnson (3), Federico Bernardeschi (2), Theo Corbeanu (2), Ola Brynhildsen (1), Alonso Coello (1), Lorenzo Insigne (1), Deandre Kerr (1), Richie Laryea (1) and Jonathan Osorio (1).
