STEP BY STEP
The Reds conclude their two-game road trip in Nashville after earning points in four of five matches since the June international break. On Wednesday, Toronto FC recorded a 1-0 victory over Western Conference leaders San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium, courtesy of Theo Corbeanu’s emphatic penalty kick after Franco Negri was penalized for a foul on the Canadian winger. At the other end, goalkeeper Sean Johnson recorded his sixth clean sheet of the campaign to secure Toronto’s third win against Western Conference opposition this season. The Matchday 25 contest also saw the long-awaited return of club captain Jonathan Osorio, who came off the bench in the 75th minute for his first appearance since May 31 against Charlotte FC.
Four nights earlier, TFC were held to a 1-1 draw by Atlanta United at BMO Field. The Reds’ starting eleven featured a welcome boost with the return of Honduran midfielder Deybi Flores, fresh off a Concacaf Gold Cup semi-final run, while Richie Laryea made his first club start since March 1. The Reds took the lead in the 48th minute through Flores, who headed home Matty Longstaff’s corner, but Atlanta equalized deep into stoppage time with Emmanuel Latte Lath converting a 101st minute penalty to share the points.

TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY
On Thursday, Toronto FC forward Theo Corbeanu was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 25, as a substitute, following an impressive performance in the club’s 1-0 victory over San Diego FC.
Corbeanu was a bright spark early on in California and in the 17th minute, his quick footwork drew a penalty after a foul from defender Franco Negri inside the penalty area. The Canadian winger stepped up and emphatically buried the penalty into the top-right corner past goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega to give the visitors a crucial lead. The 20th minute strike, Corbeanu’s first penalty for the Reds, marked a team-leading fifth MLS goal of the season and a joint-team-leading eighth goal contribution (six goals, two assists) across all competitions in 2025. His standout display earned him Man of the Match honours, highlighted by his decisive first-half penalty that ultimately stood as the game-winner as TFC secured the 1-0 road victory and three hard-earned points against the MLS newcomers.
The honour marks Corbeanu’s second MLS Team of the Matchday selection since joining the Reds in January 2025. In total, Toronto FC have now earned 10 MLS Team of the Matchday selections during the 2025 MLS regular season – Sean Johnson (3), Federico Bernardeschi (2), Theo Corbeanu (2), Ola Brynhildsen (1), Alonso Coello (1) and Lorenzo Insigne (1).

ONCE A RED
Saturday’s matchup could feature a pair of familiar faces for Toronto FC in Nashville SC’s Daniel Lovitz and Jacob Shaffelburg. Lovitz, a Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania native, was selected 24th overall by Toronto in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft and recorded four assists in 47 appearances across three seasons (2014 – 2016) for TFC. Now in his sixth season with the Boys in Gold, the MLS veteran defender has started all 23 league matches in 2025, recording two goals and five assists.
Jacob Shaffelburg, a Port Williams, Nova Scotia native, originally joined the Toronto FC Academy in 2016 and became the Club’s ninth Homegrown signing in 2019. He spent four seasons (2019 – 2022) with the Reds, recording four goals and 12 assists in 61 appearances before joining Nashville in August 2022. Now in his fourth season with the club, the Canadian international has scored one goal in 13 league appearances this year and missed the club’s midweek victory over Columbus Crew after picking up an injury against Inter Miami CF on July 12.
