A HISTORIC FIRSTToronto FC hit the road to face 2025 MLS expansion club San Diego FC in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Over the past 10 seasons, TFC hold a 4W-4L-1T record in inaugural matchups against the last nine MLS expansion teams - Atlanta United, Minnesota United, Los Angeles FC, FC Cincinnati, Inter Miami CF, Nashville SC, Austin FC, Charlotte FC and St. Louis City SC.

This season, the Reds are unbeaten in four matches against Western Conference opponents (2W-2T), recording goalless draws against the Vancouver Whitecaps and Minnesota United, followed by wins over Real Salt Lake and the Portland Timbers. Wednesday’s fixture against San Diego marks TFC’s penultimate inter-conference matchup of the 2025 MLS regular season, with their final clash against Western Conference opposition set for October 8 against Los Angeles FC at BMO Stadium.

Down the other side, San Diego FC are enjoying a blistering debut campaign so far, currently leading the Western Conference with 42 points (13W-6L-3T) from 22 matches. Led by Head Coach Mikey Varas, SDFC currently lead the league in goals scored (46) and share the best goal difference (+16, tied with Philadelphia Union), with Danish winger and Designated Player Anders Dreyer playing a starring role with 11 goals and a league-leading 15 assists. Located on San Diego State University’s campus, Snapdragon Stadium has a capacity of 35,000 and is the largest soccer-specific venue in the United States.

STEP BY STEPTFC begin a two-game road trip after collecting points in three of four matches following the June international break. After closing out June with a draw and a win against the New York Red Bulls and Portland Timbers respectively, the Reds dropped a 3-1 result against New York City FC on July 3 at Yankee Stadium. On the night, Homegrown product Kosi Thompson made his 100th club appearance and Canadian international Richie Laryea returned from Gold Cup duty with Canada, coming off the bench for a 33-minute cameo in the Bronx.

On Saturday, July 12, Toronto were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Atlanta United at BMO Field. The Reds’ starting eleven featured the return of Honduran midfielder Deybi Flores, who had played in every match of Honduras’ run to the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup semi-finals, along with Richie Laryea making his first club start since March 1, 2025. TFC took the lead three minutes into the second half when Matty Longstaff’s in-swinging corner was met by a powerful header from Deybi Flores. The 48th minute goal was the Honduran’s second of the season and Longstaff’s first assist of the 2025 campaign. Atlanta United, however, were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time and Emmanuel Latte Lath stepped up to convert in the 101st minute, earning the Five Stripes a 1-1 result and a share of the points.

**ONCE A RED, ALWAYS A RED

**On Thursday, July 10, Toronto FC announced that winger Tsubasa Endoh had signed a one-day contract to officially retire as a TFC player following his courageous battle with acute undifferentiated leukemia.

A dynamic and versatile winger, Endoh was part of Toronto FC’s historic treble-winning team in 2017, one of the most successful seasons in MLS history, when the Reds won the Canadian Championship, the Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup. He also helped the Club capture three consecutive Canadian Championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018. On June 26, 2019, he set the record for the fastest goal in history by scoring just 29 seconds into a 3-2 victory over Atlanta United at BMO Field. The Tokyo, Japan native spent six seasons (2016-2021) with the Reds, registering 10 goals and five assists in 80 appearances across all competitions. He also featured prominently for Toronto FC II, providing leadership and offensive spark to the Young Reds with 11 goals and four assists in 34 appearances during the 2018 USL season. Originally selected ninth overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, Endoh joined Toronto FC after four collegiate seasons with the Maryland Terrapins, where he recorded 12 goals and 16 assists through 85 appearances.

To mark his official retirement with the club, Endoh was honoured on-field and delivered the official match ball prior to Saturday’s match against Atlanta United at BMO Field.
