AN ODE TO THE PAST
Toronto FC host 2017 MLS expansion club Atlanta United for the 17th regular season encounter in the all-time series between the two clubs. Historically, TFC hold a 5W-5L-6T record through their first 16 regular season meetings with the Five Stripes, while also holding the edge in postseason play after defeating Atlanta United in the 2019 MLS Eastern Conference Final. The conference rivals have met in Toronto seven times, with the Reds posting four wins, two draws and one loss at BMO Field, outscoring Atlanta 15-10 in those matches. On Saturday, the Reds will be aiming to replicate last season’s home victory over Atlanta, when goals from Tyrese Spicer and Prince Owusu secured a 2-0 win at BMO Field on March 23, 2024.

STEP BY STEP
Toronto FC enter their lone home fixture in July on the back of mixed results since the June break. After earning a draw against the New York Red Bulls on June 25, TFC followed up with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers, courtesy of goals from Alonso Coello, Tyrese Spicer and an Ian Smith own goal on June 28. The Matchday 21 contest also saw goalkeeper Sean Johnson record his 20th clean sheet for the club along with a club debut for TFC II midfielder and captain Michael Sullivan late in the second half.

Most recently, on July 3, the Reds fell 3-1 on the road to New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. The hosts jumped out to a two-goal lead through Hannes Wolf and Mitja Ilenic, before an own goal from former TFC shot-stopper TomĂ¡s Romero handed Toronto a lifeline. NYCFC, however, restored their two-goal cushion shortly after to seal all three points in the Matchday 22 clash. On the night, Canadian international Richie Laryea made his return from Gold Cup duty with Canada, coming off the bench for a 33-minute cameo in the Bronx.

On Thursday, July 3, Canadian midfielder Kosi Thompson made his 100th appearance for Toronto FC across all competitions, becoming the third active player alongside Jonathan Osorio and Richie Laryea to reach the milestone. He signed a First Team contract on February 25, 2022, becoming the 29th player in club history to sign for the First Team from the TFC Academy. Thompson made his TFC debut against Columbus Crew on March 12, 2022, and scored his first club goal less than a month later against Real Salt Lake on April 9, 2022. The Homegrown product became the 17th player in club history to reach the century-mark, following in the footsteps of Jonathan Osorio, Michael Bradley, Justin Morrow, Mark Delgado, Jozy Altidore, Ashtone Morgan, Alex Bono, Chris Mavinga, Eriq Zavaleta, Sebastian Giovinco, Richie Laryea, Nick Hagglund, Auro Jr., Drew Moor, Doneil Henry and Alejandro Pozuelo.
