Toronto FC (4W-10L-5T, 17 points) recorded an emphatic 3-0 victory over the Portland Timbers (8W-5L-6T, 30 points) at BMO Field, with goals from Alonso Coello, Tyrese Spicer and an Ian Smith own goal on Saturday evening.
TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser made a pair of changes from Wednesdayās side that started against the New York Red Bulls with Zane Monlouis and Derrick Etienne Jr. making way for Kosi Thompson and Tyrese Spicer.
The Reds capitalized on a start and took an early lead by the lake shore after Raoul Petretta was brought down by Omir FernĆ”ndez on the edge of the box. Alonso Coello stepped up and curled a low, powerful free-kick past an outstretched James Pantemis in Portlandās goal.
The 11th minute set-piece marked the Spanish midfielderās first goal of the 2025 season and the clubās first direct free-kick goal of the year.
Toronto enjoyed extended spells of dominance through the remainder of the first half and like the opening half, the Reds found the net eleven minutes into the second to double their advantage. This time, Alonso Coelloās out-swinging corner was met with headers from Kosi Thompson and Ola Brynhildsen before Tyrese Spicer acrobatically slammed home from close-range.
The 56th minute strike marked the Trinidad & Tobago internationalās sixth goal for the Reds and his second of the 2025 MLS campaign.
With a two-goal lead, Toronto FC II midfielder and captain Michael Sullivan made his club debut late in the second half, following the recent debut of teammate Malik Henry, who featured against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday.
The Reds added a third and final goal in stoppage time, as Portlandās Ian Smith turned the ball into his own net following a move sparked by tidy footwork down the left wing from substitute Derrick Etienne Jr.
The 94th minute strike capped off a convincing 3-0 win, along with TFCās fifth clean sheet of the campaign, in the Matchday 21 affair.
Toronto FC hit the road next to take on New York City FC on Thursday, July 3. Kick-off from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York City is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
