A new era for Canadian soccer got off to a scintillating start on Sunday with a familiar face leading the way.
The Canucks faced off with one of the region's minnows in the U.S. Virgin Islands to kick off their Concacaf Nations League campaign and cruised to a record-setting 8-0 victory. Toronto FC's Jonathan Osorio went the full 90 and scored the game-winning goal just five minutes into the match, while Tosaint Ricketts put in a 20-minute shift off the bench. Liam Fraser was an unused substitute.
"We can be satisfied with the start of this journey," Canada head coach John Herdman said post-match. "We were able to blend the veterans and young players together and start to build on the foundation and identity of this squad."
Osorio has scored 16 goals in all competitions for TFC and has translated that form to the national team squad, notching his first for Canada this calendar year. Fresh off of his contract extension, the 26-year-old joined up with Herdman's side bursting with confidence and pounced on the early chance to continue his impressive 2018 season.
