Three Keys to the Match: Toronto FC vs. New York Red Bulls

RBNY (home) Three Keys 2018

Back home for a Canada Day clash. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys for Sunday afternoon’s Eastern Conference Semifinal rematch at BMO Field.
Break The Press

The Red Bulls can create all sorts of problems for their opposition, and it all starts with their high pressing tactics.

Since taking the helm in 2015, head coach Jesse Marsch has implemented a high-energy brand of soccer that excels on a fast pace that creates havoc. Look for the Red Bulls to push high up the pitch in an attempt to turn the ball over and hit out on the break.

On the other end, TFC will have to pick their passes carefully and look to play through the press where they can expose New York when they commit numbers forward.

Deadly Duo

The visitors have plenty of fire power up top, including a wily veteran and an exciting newcomer.

Two-time Golden Boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips is showing no signs of slowing down in his sixth season in MLS, currently second-best in the league with 11 goals in 2018. The Englishman is adept in the air and with the ball at his feet and (usually) makes the most of his chances in the area.

Pulling the strings in the midfield is 23-year-old Kaku. The Paraguayan international leads the league with 10 assists this season. Michael Bradley and company will need to deny him the ball in midfield to cut off his access to the attack.

Win The Wings

Injuries have taken their toll on the season so far, but the return of Justin Morrow has provided a big boost for the Reds.

The 2017 Best XI defender started and went the full 90 against NYCFC at the weekend and bagged an assist against D.C. United in TFC’s last match at BMO Field. Along with Nico Hasler, the Reds will have to make the most of the wide areas against the likes of Kemar Lawrence and Michael Murillo to provide service for the attacking core on Sunday.
