Three Keys to the Match: New York City FC vs. Toronto FC

NYC (away) Three Keys 2018

Ready to rumble in the Big Apple. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys for Sunday night’s match at Yankee Stadium.
Bandbox

New York City FC play in one of the most unique venues in MLS. Sometimes it works in their favour, other times the opposition takes advantage.

We’ve seen it before, and the Reds will once again look to make the most of the smaller dimensions at Yankee Stadium. With less room to roam, play is usually funnelled through the middle of the park where the Reds can create overloads in the midfield. Look for Greg Vanney’s side to apply pressure early and often to force turnovers in dangerous areas.

Coaching Change

Sunday’s match will mark the first match of the post-Patrick Vieira era for NYCFC.

With the Arsenal legend moving on France’s Ligue 1 with Nice, just the third head coach in NYCFC history is set to take the reins on Sunday night. After spending the last 11 years working as Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s assistant, Domènec Torrent has arrived in New York and will look to build on his predecessor’s success. Exactly how much he changes tactically will be something to keep an eye on.

V for Villa

Since joining the league in 2015, few players have been as impactful as Spanish legend David Villa.

The former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Valencia star has 71 goals and 25 assists to his name and is showing no signs of slowing down at age 36 with 8 goals and 4 assists through 9 starts in 2018. He may not possess the blinding pace he was boasted in his youth, but the savvy veteran can find the back of the net in a variety of ways. The Reds will need to limit his touches in the final third and force him deeper into the midfield to receive the ball in the hopes of keeping him off the scoresheet.
