Three Keys to the Match: Toronto FC vs. Seattle Sounders

SEA Three Keys 2018

The Reds look to keep it rolling at home. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys to the match vs. the Seattle Sounders.
A Familiar Foe

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the last two MLS Cup Finals against the Sounders, it’s that goalkeeper Stefan Frei can be a tough puzzle to solve.

The one-time Red was tremendous in both 2016 and 2017 at BMO Field, making some jaw-dropping saves to keep Seattle dreams alive. Toronto FC eventually found the breakthrough in the 67th minute last December, proving that if you at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. The Reds will need to continue to pepper Frei with shots on Wednesday night to secure their second straight win at home.

Midfield Mettle

The Seattle team that will take the field on Wednesday night will look quite a bit different than the one that fell in the final just five months ago, for better and worse.

Much like TFC, the injury bug has ravaged the Sounders as key pieces Roman Torres and Jordan Morris will miss the rematch. However, midfield talisman Osvaldo Alonso is set to make his return to BMO Field after missing out on the 2017 Final. The Sounders captain is still regarded as one of the top holding midfielders in MLS, highly adept at winning the ball back for his side and shielding the back four. The battle between Michael Bradley and Alonso will go a long way to determining the outcome on Wednesday night.

V for Vazquez

Speaking of returning players, perhaps none have been more influential for the Reds than Victor Vazquez.

After being sidelined for most of the season to date, Vazquez has been massive since reintegrating into the team. The Spaniard has notched two goals in his last two games and his calming presence in the midfield has helped to set the tone for the TFC attack. Look for the Reds to find Vazquez early and often to pull the strings in the final third.
