Toronto FC II finished their two game road trip with a 4-1 loss to top of the table Louisville City FC on Tuesday night at Slugger Field.
Ayo Akinola won an early penalty, twisting and turning on the right wing before being tugged back by Tarek Morad. Sal Bernal stepped up to take it, but Greg Ranjitsingh made a terrific save in the Louisville net to keep it tied early.
Phil Di Bennardo was making his first start in goal for The Young Reds and was good when called upon, making several saves and claiming crosses with aplomb. In the 69th minute he acrobatically turned a deflected shot onto the bar; a moment which provided the impetus for his teammates to take more control of the game.
Shaan Hundal had been busy all evening, gamely running down loose balls and holding the ball up effectively as an attacking focal point and in the 79th minute he got a just reward for his effort.
Liam Fraser strode out of defence and played a pass down the right touchline where Hundal collected it before driving into the penalty area. The angle looked too tight for him to score, but Bernal's run across the centre of the box kept the defence waiting for the cross. Hundal was able use this distraction to fire it low between the goalkeeper's legs for his third goal of the year.
Toronto FC II will play their next game at home on Sunday June 26th against Charleston Battery. Head Coach Jason Bent will be looking to carry over the play of the last 20 minutes of this game into that contest in order to make a push for the playoff spots in the second half of the season.
