Training Notes: Reds Get Set For D.C.

Training April 12

Toronto FC returned to training on Tuesday as they begin to prepare for Saturday’s match against D.C. United at 5 PM ET [TSN | TSN 1050].

The eight-game road trip to begin the season is almost over. With three games remaining before the Reds return to BMO Field for the first time in 2016, there are marked improvements in the side compared to last year, when TFC started the season with seven games on the road.

“I think we’re stronger [mentally],” said Damien Perquis following training on Tuesday. “Last year when we let in one goal we would let in two or three more. This year we have the mentality to comeback in the game and score goals. It’s a good step forward.”

The defence has been a positive through five games, with the Reds conceding a goal per game thus far. Perquis credited his defensive partner Drew Moor for his strong play to start the season.

“I feel very good in my role,” said Perquis. “Drew has given me the opportunity to concentrate more on my job.”

Another offseason addition enjoying a successful start to his TFC career is Steven Beitashour.

“It’s the little things, like building camaraderie,” said Beitashour.

“When you have the feeling of being welcomed it’s definitely nice. Right now we’re continuing to build that and on the field you can see what that does. Anytime a [teammate] has your back it’s a lot easier.”

Greg Vanney sees a difference in the squad this year as well. Like Perquis, Vanney believes the Reds have a stronger mentality. Bringing the likes of Beitashour, Moor, Clint Irwin and Will Johnson has raised the club’s competitive spirit.

“Last year we almost expected to [concede] a goal,” said Vanney. “Our first reaction would be to hang our heads and the second reaction would be to almost overplay to try and get ourselves back in the game and we would leave ourselves exposed.”

“[This season] we’re doing a better job of not hanging our head and sticking with the program. We’re making little adjustments as we need to and keeping ourselves in position.”

The Reds will face another test at RFK Stadium against D.C. United. Ben Olsen’s side is coming off a 4-0 demolition of the Vancouver Whitecaps. It was their first win of the season, but TFC will hope to stymie their momentum on Saturday.
