Major League Soccer (MLS) announced Thursday that Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco has been named the Etihad Airways Player of the Month for July. He becomes the first player in club history to win Player of the Month honours.

Giovinco finished the month of July with five goals and three assists in four matches. On July 12, Giovinco scored the first Tripletta (Italian for hat trick) in Toronto FC club history during MLS league play. The hat trick tied for third fastest in MLS history coming in a span of just nine minutes. Down 2-0 to New York City FC, Giovinco’s nine minutes of brilliance gave TFC the lead heading into half-time in a match that ended in a 4-4 draw. During the match, Giovinco set the club record for combined points in a single season (goals and assists) with 19 points, 11 goals and 8 assists. He also became the third player in club history to record 10 goals in a season.

In addition, Giovinco was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 19, becoming the only player to have earned the award three times this season after previously winning back-to-back in Weeks 13 and 14.

Giovinco was also named to the MLS Team of the Week for three consecutive weeks during the month of July (Weeks 19, 20, 21) bringing his total to seven honours this season (Weeks 9, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21).

Voting for MLS Player of the Month presented by Etihad is open to the public. The five final nominees are chosen by MLSsoccer.com editorial staff.
