Starting another CONCACAF Champions League campaign on Wednesday, Toronto FC will take on El Salvador’s C.D. Aguila to begin hopefully another long run in the continent’s top club football competition.

The Salvadorans come into the match in good form after a rocky start to the Primera Division’s Apertura.

A 3-0 opening round defeat to Alianza F.C. on July 14 was followed by a pair of wins. Aguila beat L.A. Firpo 1-0 courtesy of a Darwin Bonilla goal on July 22, then six days later let loose on Once Municipal 3-0. Walter Soto, Yaikel Perez and Henry Romero all found the back of the net in the first half of that match. A fourth goal eluded Aguila when Osael Romero missed a penalty just before the hour mark.

With six points from three games, Aguila sits fourth in the Apertura heading into Wednesday’s CCL contest.

Aguila is one of three Salvadoran teams in the 2012/13 CCL. The third spot was granted to the nation when Belize was stripped of theirs for not having a stadium that meets CONCACAF minimum standards.

Canada continues to have just one place in the tournament, which has been held by Toronto as the Canadian champion for four straight years.

The teams are competing for first place in Group 1, alongside Mexican champion Santos Laguna. Only the group winner advances to the quarterfinals in a format change from the previous edition of CCL.
