Reds Receive Day Of Rest

2012 Preseason

Toronto FC players had a recovery session Saturday and on Sunday, are expected to enjoy their first day off from training since arriving in Orlando six days earlier.

On Friday night the Reds beat University of South Florida 5-1 in a friendly, where Luis Silva scored twice on his Toronto debut, then set up Nick Soolsma and Terry Dunfield for two other tallies. Joao Plata also found the net against USF.

The rest should be helpful as the team will return to the pitch for two training sessions on Monday. Toronto FC TV will catch up with the club Tuesday to begin its Florida coverage of preseason.

Toronto’s next match will be its first in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic, Saturday at 6 p.m. ET against Orlando City SC. The match will be streamed here at TorontoFC.ca via Major League Soccer.

The local Orlando side is the reigning USL Pro champion, effectively the top team in U.S. third division soccer. OCSC ran away with the league, recording 51 points in 24 games last season. Englishman Adrian Heath is the Orlando head coach. The former Sheffield United manager was a midfielder at Everton during the height of its English first division success in the 1980s.

Players of interest on Orlando include Jamaica international defender Demar Stewart; nine time capped Trinidad & Tobago midfielder Kevin Molino; and John Rooney, brother of Manchester United forward Wayne. The English midfielder had a short spell with New York Red Bulls of MLS in 2011.
