Canada On The Brink

Panama equalized in stoppage time, robbing Canada of three points in a 1-1 draw at the final match of the Gold Cup group stage for both countries. The draw puts Canada on the brink of elimination from the tournament.

The Panamanians are through to the quarterfinals, but Canada must hope that Guadeloupe upsets the United States in the last game of Group C Tuesday night in Kansas City in order to see the final eight.

Canada had taken the lead through a Dwayne De Rosario penalty kick at the 62nd minute. The New York Red Bulls player was taken down in the box a minute earlier when a Julian de Guzman cross was headed inside the area and in to De Rosario's path.

When maximum points looked virtually secure for the Canadians, they conceded one minute into stoppage time. Following a corner kick, the ball went off the crossbar with Canadian defenders looking for a handball call on the Panamanians. Playing to the whistle, Panama was first to react and forward Luis Tejada was eventually credited with the leveler when a second ball toward the Canada goal somehow went through goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

The Canadians failed to score from open play in their three group games. They were kept off the score sheet by the United States in a 2-0 loss in their Gold Cup opener, then beat a 10-man Guadeloupe 1-0 with another De Rosario penalty heading into the third contest.

In this match however, Canada wasn't short on chances. Simeon Jackson had a kick at goal in the opening minutes but his shot swerved away from goal as he looked for the top corner behind Panama keeper Luis Mejia. Later in the half de Guzman and De Rosario had chances to put Canada ahead before the intermission, but neither player was able to finish.

Canada is tentatively one point ahead of the United States for second place in Group C, but should they fall to third with a U.S. draw or win against Guadeloupe, the Canadians will be ousted from the tournament as the lowest seeded third place team.
