UPDATE: Frei Wins SOTW

UPDATE: May 20, 2011

Stefan Frei is a perennial contender for the Save of the Week award, and the Toronto FC goalkeeper ran away with the top honor for his heroics in Week 9.

Frei came up with the biggest save of the match last Saturday at BMO Field, turning away the Chicago Fire’s Daniel Paladini with a lightning-quick reaction save that helped TFC hold on for soggy 2-2 draw.

Paladini appeared to primed for a dramatic game-winner after he took a feed from Corben Bone into the TFC box, but then Frei closed in and somehow swatted away Paladani’s shot with his left hand to keep the Fire at bay.

Frei captured more than 50 percent of the vote, easily topping a pair of efforts from Philadelphia’s Faryd Mondragón.

Final Voting Results

1. Stefan Frei, Toronto FC  50.63%

2. Faryd Mondragón, Philadelphia  22.68%

3. Faryd Mondragón, Philadelphia  9.44%

4. Jay Nolly, Vancouver  8.66%

5. Dan Kennedy, Chivas USA  8.58%

Stefan Frei - as if there was any doubt - is nominated for MLS Save of the Week for his outstanding 83rd minute stop against Daniel Paladini of the Chicago Fire on Saturday night in the Reds' 2-2 draw.

Toronto had the match all but wrapped up with a 2-0 lead, but a late charge from the Fire (aided by a relaxed approach by TFC players) allowed Chicago to pull even. Then with seven minutes to regulation, Paladini was sent through on a breakaway, but Frei salvaged a point for Toronto with a flash of his left paw.
