Martina Brace Leads The Way

Toronto FC celebrates Martina's second goal.

TORONTO — Toronto FC’s Dutch connections paid off Saturday as the Reds rebounded from last Saturday’s defeat in Vancouver to beat the Portland Timbers, 2-0.

The result was paced by Dutchman Javier Martina, who scored his first two MLS goals to give his countryman Aron Winter his first career win as a manager.

Toronto played a controlled game throughout, and although the Timbers did manage a great deal of possession, Reds goalkeeper Stefan Frei was not tested as he earned his 14th career clean sheet. The Swiss-born stopper also tallied an assist on Martina's second goal.

The 20,086 home fans exploded in the 14th minute when Maicon Santos feathered a perfect pass into the Portland 18-yard box toward a streaking Dwayne De Rosario. Although his first touch was heavy, De Rosario recovered to lay the ball off to Martina, who fired a low drive past Timbers 'keeper Adin Brown.

However, the team was not able to keep its momentum as several giveaways from a shaky TFC back line gave the Timbers the majority of the ball.

Portland forward Kenny Cooper created chaos for TFC's back line throughout the game and was able to draw several fouls in dangerous positions toward the end of the first half. However, the Timbers were not able to generate any significant pressure from the ensuing free kicks.

Martina put the game out of reach in the 70th minute with a brilliant piece of skill. Frei sent a 60-yard pass up field that the Dutchman took on one touch and lobbed the ball over Jake Gleeson, who came on as a substitute in the 46th minute after Brown left the game with an injury.

Toronto finished the game with 10 men after Mikael Yourassowsky received a second yellow for time wasting. However, the Timbers were unable to take advantage of the extra man and fell to their second defeat of their inaugural season.
