Gold Cup Pits Canada Against U.S.

Nana Attakora

TORONTO - Canada will be in Group C of the 2011 Gold Cup alongside the United States, Panama and Guadeloupe.  Its first match will take place on June 7 in Detroit, a mouth-watering fixture played near the Canada-U.S. border against the Americans.

From there the national team will move on to Florida where it will face Panama and round out the group stage in Kansas City taking on Guadeloupe.

Toronto FC players could play a pivotal role for Canada (or any other CONCACAF country if selected), and those representing their country could miss upwards of four matches should it advance to the final on June 25 in Pasadena, California.

Canada won the 2000 Gold Cup, but only reached the quarterfinals in 2009 after making it to the semifinals two years earlier when they were ousted in a controversial manner against the United States in Chicago.
