CONCACAF Rival Arrives At Celtic

Honduras and Motagua left back Emilio Izaguirre is in Scotland and on the verge of signing for Glasgow power Celtic F.C., according to an
AFP report on GOL TV Canada
.

The Motagua number 21 was a terror on the left flank against Toronto in the CONCACAF Champions League preliminary round which the Reds won 3-2 on aggregate.

Behind Georgie Welcome in the first leg and Amado Guevara in the return match, Izaguirre was arguably the biggest threat for Motagua. Incidentally, Welcome had a trial with Izaguirre’s soon-to-be Glasgow rival Rangers in the early part of August, but a contract has not materialized.

It’s rarely positive for a club to lose one of its top players no matter what kind of money is involved in the transaction. But in this case, given that commercial investment in Honduran club football is sagging in part thanks to political unrest, this move should be viewed as a happy development for player as well as the club.

It’s also telling that CONCACAF has players that are coveted in Europe by midsized clubs because there is a decent level of football being played in our region. Our own Champions League often gets overlooked here by North American teams and supporters alike and that needs to change.

Izaguirre played a full 90 minutes in two World Cup matches against Chile and Spain for Honduras in South Africa before he was rested for the final group game.  Coach Reinaldo Rueda chose to give his substitutes a run-out against Switzerland with Honduras already eliminated.
