Junior Academy Returns From Houston Trip

Stuart Neely

HOUSTON – The final match of the competition for all teams was cancelled due to weather conditions but for two.

DC United U17 Academy team won the 2010 SUM U-17 Cup by defeating Real Salt Lake 5-4 on penalty kicks after a scoreless championship final.

Toronto FC U-16 Academy team was disappointed about the cancelled matches as the Junior Reds were looking forward to playing FC Dallas followig a dramatic win in Penalties against Los Angeles.

Goals from Tristan Jackman, Sergio Camargo and Steve Reel placed the Juniors in position to complete the match 3-2 winners, but a late goal from LA sent the game to penalties.

Junior Reds' keeper Chad Bush literally saved the day by stopping two penalties in the shootout to give Toronto their first win of MLS SUM U-17 Cup.

"It has been a great opportunity for these boys to see a higher level of play and it has taken them four games to pull a solid performance together," said coach Stuart Neely.

But the young Reds were physically outmatched in this tournament.

"The difference in all the squads in comparison to ourselves is bifold. They are enormous in height and build and they can use it well. We can compete in footballing terms but we must improve our physical size as we simply were pushed off the ball in many circumstances."

Many of the players on this U-16 squad were younger than their MLS counterparts.

"While we have a younger squad we should still be able to finish the chances we created and at any level (not finishing) will hurt you."

Neely is confident that the team improved each game while accumulating their record of one win and three losses. The coach was also happy to have the eyes of first team assistant coach Danny Dichio to aid him in his assessment.

"We were fortunate to have Danny with us to observe the event and work with the players, and we have all learned a lot. We need these MLS matches on a regular basis."

Dichio himself took away a great deal of positives from this tournament.

"The boys played a lot of games in a short period of time and gained valuable experience. This is a great tournament that the league has put on and it is important as the league continues to grow," said Dichio. "We have a group of players here that played some good football at times but struggled physically. It was good for me to see this event."
