Training Notes: Reds Prepare For Colorado Test

Training March 29

Toronto FC will look to get back on the winning track this Saturday when they take on the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

It will be a bittersweet return for Drew Moor and Clint Irwin, who were longtime members of the Rapids. Though the pair are happily settled in Toronto, both players are looking forward to seeing some old friends while in Denver.

“I’m excited,” said Irwin following Tuesday’s training session. “It’s a place that I really enjoyed playing in. I have a lot of friends [on the Rapids] and friends in Denver.

“It’s a place that I called home for six and a half years,” said Moor. “The [Rapids] treated me so well. My wife and I started our lives there.”

The Reds will have to deal with the high altitude in Denver. The Rocky Mountain air will help the ball carry, making it key for Irwin and his defenders to measure crosses correctly.

The Rapids have started the season 1-1-1 while making high profile additions in Jermaine Jones and Tim Howard. Neither player will play on Saturday night, but that doesn’t make the Rapids a pushover by any means.

“They are a high intensity, highly emotional group, especially at their place,” said head coach Greg Vanney.

Players to watch include Albanian international Shkëlzen Gashi and midfielder Dillon Serna. Rapids striker Kevin Doyle will miss the the match after suffering a major gash to his shin during international duty with Ireland.

Luis Solignac, Conor Doyle and Dominique Badji are potential replacements for Doyle.

"Those are the three guys that we'll be looking at to replace Kevin (Doyle)," Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni said, via the Denver Post’s Daniel Boniface. "We have the whole week of training to get guys some reps."
