Fraser Theslof Calichman Training

TORONTO – Heading home with a zero on the scoreboard, Toronto FC are looking for more of the same in the return leg at BMO Field.

Battling to a 0-0 stalemate in Columbus, the Reds managed to keep a dangerous Crew SC attack off the board in a hostile environment, setting up an intriguing second leg of the Eastern Conference Championship.

“We put as much pressure on ourselves to keep clean sheet than anyone else does,” defender Drew Moor said on Saturday afternoon. “We did a good job defensively in Columbus, but being at home, we know away goals will be huge for them. We need to be focused, organized and communicate well.”

With the away goals tiebreaker in effect, the Reds will have to remain stout defensively while pushing for some offense of their own after failing to break through at MAPFRE Stadium; any scoring draw would see TFC eliminated from postseason play.

But with Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco set to return to the lineup, the side is confident they can replicate their defensive prowess from the first leg while adding some punch in the final third.

“We’ve done a good job all year of keeping it tight defensively while still going out in search of goals; this game will be no different,” assistant coach Dan Calichman told TorontoFC.ca. “We’re at home, we’ll be aggressive and we’ll look to score goals.

Playing at BMO Field has been a recipe for success for TFC in 2017, picking up 42 of a possible 51 points at home. With everything on the line on Wednesday night, goalkeeper Alex Bono is looking for more of the same as they look to return to MLS Cup.

“We have an opportunity to play in the final with a win at home,” he told reporters following training. “I don’t think we need anything extraordinary from our defenders; a performance like we saw in the first leg is perfect for me. We just need to stay within ourselves and play our game.”
