Three Keys to the Match: Atlanta United FC at Toronto FC

ATL Three Keys 2018

Our season wraps up at BMO Field this Sunday. Here are the Benjamin Moore Three to the Match vs. Atlanta United FC.
Make Martinez Miss

Since the league’s inception in 1996, no one managed to surpass Roy Lassiter’s goal-scoring record of 27, with only two players matching the feat. That all changed in 2018.

Atlanta’s Josef Martinez now stands along as Major League Soccer’s single-season leader with 30 goals and counting. The Venezuelan scored twice when the Reds visited Atlanta in August resulting in a 2-2 draw.

The Reds will need to key in on his movement in the box and limit service to the forward from wide areas.

Clean Sheet

After being one of the stingiest teams in the league a season ago, the Reds have seen their fortunes turn in 2018.

With Drew Moor and Chris Mavinga both missing large portions of the season, perhaps it should come as no surprise. Regardless, the Reds will be looking to earn their fourth clean sheet of the regular season on Sunday and keep Atlanta’s potent attack (league-best 69 goals scored) at bay.

Finish Strong

The 2018 season has been a grind for everyone at the club, but Toronto FC has a chance to finish on a high note with Atlanta United vying for the Supporters’ Shield crown at BMO Field.

Through all competitions (MLS, CCL, Canadian Championship, Campeones Cup), TFC are set to play their 47th game in a calendar year. Look for the Reds to empty the tank one last time in front of the home crowd against one of the best teams in MLS. A strong performance at home could set the tone for the team heading into another important CCL campaign next February.
