Toronto FC pair Sean Johnson and Lorenzo Insigne have been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 12, as a starter and substitute respectively, after their impressive performances in the Reds’ 2-0 shutout victory against D.C. United at BMO Field.

Making a team-leading twelfth start of the 2025 MLS season, Johnson continued his strong start to the campaign with a commanding performance in between the sticks for TFC. The American shot-stopper recorded five saves on the afternoon, turning away all five of D.C. United’s shots on target, including an instinctive save to deny the 2024 MLS Golden Boot winner Christian Benteke in the 85th minute.

Johnson’s standout display helped Toronto FC secure their fourth clean sheet of the 2025 MLS campaign. Currently in his 15th MLS season, the Lilburn, Georgia native has made 42 saves through 12 matches, ranking among the top six goalkeepers across the league.

Teammate Lorenzo Insigne also played an instrumental role in the Reds’ second victory of the campaign on Saturday. Deployed in a central ‘number 10’ role, the Italian delivered an all-action performance, contributing to both goals scored by the hosts. The opener came from a swift counter-attack, as Theo Corbeanu whipped in a pinpoint cross that Insigne met with a low, diving heard to put the Reds ahead.

Twenty minutes after scoring his first goal of the campaign, Lorenzo Insigne was involved again – combining with compatriot Federico Bernardeschi in a smooth give-and-go before delivering a dangerous cross that was turned into the net by D.C. United’s Lucas Bartlett. The own goal stood as the second and final goal of the Eastern Conference clash, with Lorenzo Insigne’s dynamic display earning him Man of the Match honours.

The honour marks Johnson’s second MLS Team of the Matchday selection of the 2025 season and his sixth overall since joining Toronto FC. Meanwhile, Insigne earns his first selection of the campaign and tenth overall since joining the Reds. In total, Toronto FC have now earned four MLS Team of the Matchday selections during the 2025 MLS regular season – Sean Johnson (2), Federico Bernardeschi (1) and Lorenzo Insigne (1).
