The weekend already. Toronto FC’s busy offseason shifted to a different gear this week, with a series of transactions to cap what was a big month for the club.
With Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore already signed, TFC addressed depth at centre back and found another midfielder to add to the mix.
There was more than that, as Greg Vanney and Steven Caldwell discussed mental health in the realm of professional sports.
Here’s what went down this week.
Monday - Toronto FC officially signs CB Damien Perquis. The Polish international adds veteran experience at a position that requires it. “I’m very pleased,” said Steven Caldwell, the person that will likely pair with the Polish international.
“We needed some experience back there. The young guys did extremely well last year but it was unfair and difficult for them to play alongside each other when I was injured.”
TFC isn’t finished. The Reds acquire Eriq Zavaleta, another CB, from the Seattle Sounders. “It’s an exciting time to be here,” Zavaleta said as training camp opens.
Tuesday - Toronto FC trades Dominic Oduro to the Montreal Impact for allocation money.
“This deal provided an opportunity to acquire financial assets that will allow us to continue to strengthen our squad,” says TFC GM Tim Bezbatchenko. “We’d like to thank Dom for his contributions to our club and wish him all the best.”
Wednesday - Canada recognizes Bell Let’s Talk, an initiative that focuses on removing the stigma associated with discussing mental health. Greg Vanney and Steven Caldwell talked about the lack of resources available to professional soccer players in terms of mental health, and the changes they’ve seen in the years since.
Later that night Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore register strong showings in a 3-2 U.S. loss to Chile.
Thursday - Toronto FC signs French midfielder Benoit Cheyrou. The former Marseille man’s resume is impressive. Cheyrou was named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year on three consecutive occasions (07-08, 08-09, 09-10) and helped the club win the 2009-10 Ligue 1 title and three consecutive Coupe de la Ligue titles.
Friday - Take a breath. The Reds travel to Orlando for training on Sunday and return on February 9th.
