THROUGH THE YEARS
TFC take on D.C. United, one of Major League Soccer’s 10 original founding clubs in 1996, for the 45th regular season meeting between the sides. Historically, Toronto hold an all-time regular season record of 13W-18L-13T against the Black-and-Red and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run at Audi Field to three matches after consecutive 2-2 draws in the 2024 and 2025 MLS seasons. The Reds will also be chasing their first-ever victory at Audi Field and their first road win over D.C. United since Sebastian Giovinco's lone goal secured a 1-0 victory on April 16, 2016.

The Reds enter Saturday's Matchday 18 clash on the back of consecutive scoreless draws against Eastern Conference opposition since the MLS season resumed after the FIFA World Cup 26™ break. Toronto FC opened the second half of their campaign with a hard-fought 0-0 draw against rivals CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on July 16, welcoming back winger Theo Corbeanu from injury for his first start since the club's 2025 season finale and midfielder Djordje Mihailovic for his first appearance since March. Canadian attacker Jules-Anthony Vilsaint also made his 50th Major League Soccer appearance, split between CF Montréal and Toronto FC, on the night.
Six nights later, Toronto earned another 0-0 road draw against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Both sides created quality chances throughout the contest, with Jules-Anthony Vilsaint, Dániel Sallói and Josh Sargent all going close for the Reds, while goalkeeper Luka Gavran produced several key saves to record his second consecutive clean sheet and third of the 2026 MLS season, helping Toronto secure another valuable point on the road.
A WEEK TO REMEMBER
From signing his first MLS contract to making his Toronto FC debut, Richard Chukwu has enjoyed a week he will never forget.
On Thursday, July 16, TFC announced the signing of Chukwu to a Major League Soccer (MLS) contract as a Homegrown player through the 2029-30 MLS season with a club option for 2030-31. He became the 38th player in club history to graduate from the Toronto FC Academy to the First Team. Chukwu joined the Academy in January 2020 and progressed through the U-15, U-17 and U-19 ranks before making 31 appearances for Toronto FC II across three MLS NEXT Pro seasons. Internationally, he has been one of the most frequently called-up players in Academy history, representing Canada at the U-15, U-17 and U-20 levels since 2022. In November 2024, he also earned his first senior Canadian Men's National Team training camp call-up under Head Coach Jesse Marsch at just 16 years old.
A day later, Chukwu was named to Canada's roster for the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship alongside fellow Toronto FC athletes Antone Bossenberry (Toronto FC II) and Tim Fortier (Toronto FC Academy). The tournament, taking place from July 24 to August 9 in Mexico, will see Canada face Panama, Honduras and Jamaica in Group C, with qualification for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games at stake.
On Wednesday, July 22, Chukwu completed a remarkable seven-day stretch by making his Toronto FC debut, becoming the 13th player to debut for the Reds this season. The 18-year-old started alongside Walker Zimmerman at left centre-back and showcased his composure in an impressive first MLS appearance, recording four clearances while covering 6.91 kilometres and reaching a top speed of 31.57 km/hr during his 71-minute outing to help Toronto earn a clean sheet and road point at New England.
ONCE A RED
A trio of current D.C. United players have previously represented the Reds during their professional careers.
Goalkeeper Alex Bono enjoyed a standout eight-year spell with TFC from 2015 to 2022, establishing himself as one of the most successful shot-stoppers in club history. Originally selected sixth overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, the Syracuse, New York native made 157 appearances for Toronto FC and played a key role in the club’s historic 2017 treble-winning campaign, helping the Reds lift the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship. That season, Bono recorded clean sheets in both the Eastern Conference Final against Columbus Crew and MLS Cup against Seattle Sounders. He remains the Reds’ all-time leader in goalkeeper wins (67) and clean sheets (35), while also holding the club’s single season clean sheet record (13). After making 47 appearances for D.C. United across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Bono rejoined the Black-and-Red for a second stint in January 2026.
Fellow goalkeeper Sean Johnson also previously featured for Toronto FC, spending three seasons with the Reds from 2023 to 2025. The veteran goalkeeper made 84 appearances during his time in Toronto, ranking third on the club’s all-time clean sheets list (22) and joint-fourth in goalkeeper wins (20). Now in his 17th Major League Soccer season, the Lilburn, Georgia native signed with D.C. United in December 2025 and has made 16 appearances for the Black-and-Red during the 2026 campaign.
American midfielder Brandon Servania joined D.C. United as a free agent in February 2025 following two seasons with Toronto FC. He made 31 appearances during his debut campaign with the Reds before an ACL injury in October 2023 limited him to three substitute appearances the following season. The Birmingham, Alabama native has since made 49 appearances for D.C. United.
