Reds' "final tuneup" ends in draw against Sporting KC

Toronto FC drew 1-1 with Sporting KC in their final preseason match on Saturday afternoon behind closed doors at St. David’s Performance Center in Austin, Texas.

Scoreless at the half, Daniel Salloi gave SKC the lead in the 73rd minute, but 17-year-old Hugo Mbongue put TFC level in the 89th minute.

Mbongue, currently on the books at TFC II, is the younger brother of first team midfielder Ralph Priso.

“Final tuneup, defensively some good organization. I didn't think we started well, but then gradually started to connect passes, a couple of chances,” said Bob Bradley post-match. “Things to work on, but we feel good that at this point there's a lot of positives and now we'll go into the last week and build on those and be ready for Dallas.”

Toronto closes preseason with a record of three wins, two losses, and a draw.

“I thought it was a good game,” said Noble Okello. “We executed what the coach wanted us to do. We got a good result – even though it was 1-1 I thought it was a good result. So yeah, I think it was a good game.”

With their first match of the 2022 MLS regular season on Saturday away to FC Dallas, Toronto will remain in Texas as they make their final preparations.

“This stretch in Austin has been very good,” assessed Bradley. “Four games, training, the players continue to take in ideas, a lot of really good responses in terms of things that we challenged guys with.”

“So when we think of everything that you want to accomplish in preseason,” he added. “We've got things off to a good start.”

After the Dallas match, TFC will return to Toronto in anticipation of the home opener at BMO Field the following Saturday against the New York Red Bulls.

“It was a good preseason for us,” said Okello. “We took the coach's concepts very well and we worked on them every day and now we're ready for the season to start and to go after it.”
