Describing what Portland, San Jose and Montreal are going through as ‘rough’ would be an understatement.
The three teams remain winless through seven weeks of the 2014 MLS campaign. It didn’t get any better this week. In fact, somehow, it got worse.
Portland went toe-to-toe with Real Salt Lake in Utah, driving possession while registering several scoring chances. Nick Rimando, arguably the best goalkeeper in MLS, was up for the challenge, foiling the Timbers and forward Max Urruti at every turn.
In the end, Real claimed points against Portland for the 10th consecutive time thanks to Ned Grabavoy’s winner in the 78th minute.
It’s a cruel game, but Canadian international Will Johnson doesn't want to focus on that aspect.
“I’m a little bit sick and tired of hearing that; it’s all about results,” Johnson said, according to MLSSoccer.com. “We have to step up and make plays, and there are plays out there that are there to be made. This is professional soccer, and when we get in those big moments we look like amateurs. So we have to face the reality that we have to be better.”
Three second-half goals by Sporting KC added to Montreal’s woes, who took three points from seven games.
Owner Joey Saptuo knows Impact supporters are upset, but pleaded for patience.
San Jose also sit on three points after a goalless draw against Colorado. That game ended in controversy as Earthquakes defender Adam Jahn was sent off in the 87th minute, leading to a war of words between the coaching staffs.
It’s early, but as Johnson said, that remains of little solace for three teams who are perilously close to a lost season.
New York City FC will play at Yankee Stadium in 2015
New York City FC will begin MLS play in 2015, and we now know where they’ll be planning.
Yankee Stadium may not be the most ideal venue for a soccer game, but it does serve as a legendary venue that will provide quite the backdrop for NYCFC’s inaugural season.
The stadium will be downsized from its current capacity of 49,642 seats to 34,444 seats for MLS games.
Though the club remains insistent on getting a soccer-specific stadium built somewhere in New York City proper, there is no timetable.
Goal of the week
Kekuta Manneh salvaged a point for Vancouver with a terrific strike in the 86th minute against the LA Galaxy. Manneh and Darren Mattocks terrorized LA’s defence in the second half, and were rewarded with a late equalizer.
