Pumas Mauled By Tigres In Mexico

Toronto FC’s Champions League Group C rival Pumas UNAM received a mauling from Tigres UANL on Saturday, losing 4-1 in the Mexican Apertura. Pumas conceded all four goals in the first half of the derby dubbed Clasico Universitario.

Striker Martin Bravo shrugged off the loss, saying the Mexican league is quite competitive and there is no use “beating a dead horse.”

Captain Juan Francisco Palencia echoed his teammate's sentiments, admitting that they faced a better team on the day but the defeat is “in the past” and the team is “not to mourn” any further.

Pumas will look to regroup ahead of a visit from lowly Atlas on Sunday, before hosting Tauro F.C. in the final CCL Group C match on Wednesday, October 19. A draw for Pumas will be enough to send them through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League; a loss however, will produce a shocking ouster from the continent’s premier tournament for the Mexican Clausura champion, as Tauro would hold an edge in head-to-head competition.

Tauro fared better over the weekend, beating Colon 4-0. The Panamanian side faces two more league games this week before the trip to Mexico next Wednesday.
