Toronto FC (4W-7L-8T, 20 points) returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution (9W-7L-3T, 30 points) at BMO Field, courtesy of Niklas Dorsch’s emphatic game-winner on Saturday evening.
TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser made two changes to the side that started against New York City FC a fortnight ago, with Benjamín Kuscevic and Markus Cimermancic coming in for Kobe Franklin and Jonathan Osorio. Chilean defender Kuscevic made his first start for the Reds since April 25, marking his return from an injury lay-off.
New England Revolution started on the front foot, calling Luka Gavran into action early as he made an important save to deny Peyton Miller’s bicycle kick in the fifth minute.
The two sides exchanged chances before the Reds broke the deadlock just before half-time. Djordje Mihailovic picked out Theo Corbeanu in space on the right, with the Canadian winger’s effort taking a deflection off New England defender Will Sands and finding the back of the net.
Toronto FC doubled their advantage eight minutes later, when Dániel Sallói picked out Djordje Mihailovic at the top of the box. The midfielder laid the ball off to Niklas Dorsch, who unleashed a powerful, curling effort that flew past Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner and into the top corner.
The first-half stoppage time effort marked the German midfielder’s first goal for the Reds since joining the club from 1. FC Heidenheim on July 28. The strike also marked Mihailovic’s fifth goal contribution (two goals, three assists) and Sallói’s 10th (four goals, six assists) of the 2026 MLS season.
Seeking a response after the break, the visitors piled on the pressure, with Richie Laryea and Josh Sargent making crucial blocks in quick succession to keep the Revolution at bay.
The hosts were then reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Djordje Mihailovic was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Carles Gil.
New England Revolution pulled one back in the 90th minute when substitute Wilson Harris headed home Jack Harrison’s cross to make it 2-1.
The Reds’ defensive resolve stood firm through the closing stages, denying the Revolution a late equalizer as Toronto FC held on for a 2-1 victory and secured all three points at BMO Field.
Toronto FC welcome Charlotte FC to town next on Wednesday, August 19. Kick-off from BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally in English and Spanish on Apple TV.
