Toronto FC (4W-11L-5T, 17 points) fell to a 3-1 road loss to New York City FC (9W-7L-4T, 31 points) on Thursday evening Yankee Stadium.
Toronto FC Head Coach Robin Fraser named an unchanged starting eleven from the side that started in the win over Portland Timbers at home last weekend. The lineup featured TFC Homegrown product Kosi Thompson, who made his 100th appearance for the Reds, becoming the third active player alongside Jonathan Osorio and Richie Laryea to reach the century mark.
Despite a bright start from Toronto FC, it was the Boys in Blue that struck first against the run of play, as Mitja Ilenic’s lofted cross into the box was met by a well-struck, left-footed volley from Hannes Wolf in the 20th minute.
Just four minutes after the restart, New York City FC added a second as Mitja Ilenic redirected Agustín Ojeda’s low cross into the net.
Seeking a response, the Reds carved out a pair of promising goalscoring opportunities, only for both Theo Corbeanu and Ola Brynhildsen to be denied by former TFC goalkeeper Tomás Romero in the New York net.
Canadian duo Richie Laryea and Deandre Kerr came off the bench shortly after, with Laryea making his first appearance since returning from international duty with Canada at the Concacaf Gold Cup.
The Reds pulled one back in the 70th minute when Theo Corbeanu beat Birk Risa down the right wing and fired in a driven cross that deflected off Thiago Martins and Tomás Romero on its way to the net.
The hosts responded instantly as a slick passing moved culminated with substitute Kevin O’Toole slotting home from Hannes Wolf’s setup.
O’Toole’s 74th minute strike proved to be the final goal of the Thursday night affair, as the Boys in Blue held firm secured a 3-1 victory in the Matchday 22 clash.
Toronto FC return home to host the Eastern Conference’s Atlanta United on Saturday, July 12. Kick-off from BMO Field from Toronto, Ontario is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
