Toronto FC (3W-7L-7T, 16 points) fell to a dramatic 2-1 road defeat against D.C. United (7W-5L-7T, 22 points) on Saturday evening at Audi Field.
TFC Head Coach Robin Fraser made four changes from his midweek road eleven against New England Revolution with Richard Chukwu, Alonso Coello, Deandre Kerr and Jules Anthony-Vilsaint making way for Kobe Franklin, Zane Monlouis, Derrick Etienne Jr. and Theo Corbeanu.
The two Eastern Conference sides traded early chances in the American capital, with both goalkeepers called into action inside the opening 15 minutes. Former Red Sean Johnson made key saves to deny Derrick Etienne Jr. and Dániel Sallói, while down the other end, Toronto FC goalkeeper Luka Gavran was on hand to keep out a pair of efforts from Jackson Hopkins.
D.C. United took the lead moments before the half-time whistle, when Keisuke Kurokawa's in-swinging corner found Kye Rowles, whose header took a deflection off Kobe Franklin on its way into the back of the net in the 41st minute.
The Reds pushed for a response after the restart but faced an inspired Sean Johnson who continued to stand tall against his former club. The American shot-stopper, currently in his 17th MLS season, produced a brilliant double save in the 55th minute to deny efforts from Jackson Gilman and Jonathan Osorio before coming up with another pair of stops ten minutes later to keep out substitute Djordje Mihailovic and preserve the hosts’ lead.
Toronto FC's relentless pressure was finally rewarded when Theo Corbeanu volleyed home past Johnson after Jonathan Osorio's header from Walker Zimmerman's cross was cleared off the goal line by D.C. United's Andre Dozzell.
The 76th minute equalizer marked Corbeanu’s first goal of the 2026 MLS campaign, after the Canadian winger scored six times during his debut season with the Reds in 2025.
Both sides searched for a late winner in the closing stages before D.C. United was awarded a penalty kick after Jackson Gilman was adjudged to have fouled Andre Dozzell in the 96th minute following an in-stadium review.
Tai Baribo converted the ensuing spot kick in the 100th minute, powering his effort into the bottom-left corner to hand D.C. United a dramatic 2-1 victory in Washington, D.C.
Toronto FC conclude their four-game road swing with a visit to New York City FC on Friday, July 31. Kick-off from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York City is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast globally in English and Spanish on Apple TV.
