International Break Recap | Canada continues to shine in October Window

The October international break came to an end on Thursday night.

Six Toronto FC players were involved in the action, primarily in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying as the Octagon began heating up on the road to Qatar. A further two were called up to their national teams, but did not participate.

Jonathan Osorio, Richie Laryea, Jacob Shaffelburg, and Liam Fraser, on loan with the Columbus Crew, were with the Canadians as they faced a pair of tricky away fixtures against Mexico and Jamaica before returning to BMO Field for a match against Panama.

Osorio started all three matches for John Herdman’s side and scored the crucial equalizing goal in the historic 1-1 result against Mexico at Azteca Stadium.

Laryea too started in Mexico, but he picked up a yellow card and was suspended for the scoreless draw away to Jamaica. He would play the full 90 minutes back in Toronto where Canada defeated Panama 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Shaffelburg was an unused substitute in the first match, but came on late in both matches against Jamaica and Mexico, bringing that lightning pace into the mix.

Though the more brief of his shifts, he was particularly dangerous against Jamaica with both sides looking to find a late winner. Having made his international debut last year against Barbados, these were his second and third caps for Canada.

Fraser too saw action from the bench, coming on in waning moments against both Mexico and Jamaica.

Kemar Lawrence featured in all three of Jamaica’s matches this window, playing all 270 minutes for the Reggae Boyz.

He would pick up a booking in the 2-0 loss away to the USA in their first outing, but was back out there at left-back in the 0-0 draw against Canada in Kingston.

In desperate need of points, Jamaica rallied in their third game of the window, winning 2-0 away to Honduras to leap off the bottom of the table after a slow start to qualification.

Meanwhile in CONMEBOL, Yeferson Soteldo started in Venezuela’s 3-1 loss against Brazil in Caracas and it was his cross that led to Eric Ramirez’s headed goal against the giants of South America.

He was not involved in either their 2-1 win over Ecuador nor their 3-0 loss away to Chile.

Back in Concacaf Eriq Zavaleta was called into the El Salvador squad as they prepared for two home matches either side of an away trip to Costa Rica.

But he was ruled out with injury and was not involved as the Salvadorians defeated Panama 1-0 at home before losing 2-1 away to Costa Rica and 2-0 back home against Mexico.

Chris Mavinga was in the preliminary squad for Congo DR, but was not involved in either of their AFCON World Cup Qualifiers this window – a 2-0 win at home over Madagascar and a 1-0 defeat away to the same opponent days later.

The next international break is schedule for next month with two matches to be played between November 8 and November 16.
