Every year, tens of thousands of people across North America walk together in support of finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. This year, on May 31st, the Cystic Fibrosis Canada Great StridesTM Walk will take place in Toronto and in communities across Canada, in a mission to raise funds for research and to bring awareness to the disease.
For Toronto FC goalkeeper Joe Bendik, participating in the walk is something that hits close to home.
“My nephew, Gavin, was diagnosed with CF when he was a year old”, said Bendik.
Now 11, Gavin continues to battle CF with the support of Joe and his entire family.
“He’s such a positive kid, the way he takes everything in stride. Our family is so close and we all do our part to support each other and remain positive for Gavin”.
Prior to being acquired by TFC in 2013, Joe had been connected with Great Strides during his stint with the Portland Timbers. When Bendik became aware of the Great StridesTM Walk in Toronto, he immediately expressed an interest in being involved.
“On a personal level, I do it for Gavin. But beyond that, I’ve gotten to know so many people affected by CF over the years. They’re such awesome, positive people – it helps put everything in perspective”.
Through his connection to CF, Joe values the research that is being done to help find a cure.
“To get involved and help in raising money for CF is very important, and can be life-changing. It means a lot and gives hope that one day we can find a cure”.
