Cruz Azul Flying In Mexico

Cruz Azul hosts Toronto in Champions League on Tuesday.

MEXICO CITY — Emanuel Villa, Maximiliano Biancuchi and Adrian Cortes all scored Saturday as Mexican league leader Cruz Azul extended its winning run to five straight games with a 3-0 home victory over Queretaro.

Villa headed in the opening goal in the 27th minute, Biancuchi scored the second from close range six minutes later and Cortes hit the third from a free kick in stoppage time.

The win pushed Cruz Azul six points clear atop the Apertura general standings ahead of the weekend's remaining fixtures.

Later Saturday it was: Monterrey versus Atlas, Santos versus Necaxa, Guadalajara versus Chiapas, San Luis versus Pachuca and Atlante versus Morelia.

Either Santos or unbeaten Monterrey could cut Cruz Azul's lead to three points.

Matches continue Sunday with Puebla playing UANL Tigres and Toluca taking on America.

On Friday, UAG Estudiantes drew 2-2 with UNAM Pumas.

Argentine striker Villa scored his fourth goal of the Apertura tournament to give Cruz Azul the lead over Queretaro, heading in from Julio Dominguez' left wing cross.

Fellow Argentine forward Biancuchi prodded in the second goal six minutes later after a passing move culminated with Javier Orozco heading back across goal to invite a simple finish.

Cruz Azul eased off in the second half but controlled the game with long periods of possession.

Cortes almost provided a third goal for the home side with a cross into the box that fell between Villa and Orozco in the 58th minute. Biancuchi then let fly with a rising shot from long distance that Queretaro goalkeeper Carlos Bossio stopped.

Queretaro's best chance of cutting the deficit came from former Cruz Azul defender Joaquin Beltran, who clipped a near-post corner just over the bar in the 63rd minute.

Cruz Azul finished the match strongest, with Christian Gimenez driving a low shot wide in the 79th minute before Cortes scored his side's third with a free kick curled over the wall in the second minute of stoppage time.
