Community Hero Marks Day Two

Toronto FC has launched a Community Hero Program on day two of TFC//TWELVE. The initiative recognizes individuals for their hard work and commitment to making their community a better place to live.

Toronto FC is proud to announce Michael Oest as its Community Hero - the first ever recipient - for the month of August. This Most Valuable Player has been dedicated to coaching soccer at the grassroots level for 30 years.

Oest was thrilled to meet TFC keeper Stefan Frei and new midfielder, 79-cap German international Torsten Frings on Tuesday during a tour of BMO Field.  Frei presented the hero with a personalized jersey and team kit, among other kicks for the football coach. Perhaps most meaningful to the Deutsch speaker, Oest and 2006 World Cup star Frings held a lengthy conversation in German.

“I didn’t expect this treatment,” said the local community MVP. “This goes way beyond (what I expected). It’s an honour to be selected … I am glad it was for Toronto High Park and I’m thrilled my club is getting some recognition.”

Oest was both past president and competitive coach for Westend United Soccer Club, now renamed Toronto High Park FC. He was awarded the Special Recognition Award from the Toronto Soccer Association for his many volunteering efforts.  A retired high school teacher, Oest has spent years promoting and coaching hundreds of students in the beautiful game.  It is his passion and commitment to growing the game of soccer that has inspired many around him, both players and coaches alike.

Toronto FC is committed to recognizing youth coaches in and around the city that make a difference. The launch of the Community Hero Program will recognize others like Oest, who have dedicated their time and resources to advancing the beautiful game in Toronto.

Toronto FC would like to thank Michael Oest for his continued commitment and dedication to the sport of soccer in and around the city of Toronto.
